“It came as a huge surprise.”
Last month, animal rescuer Citlalli Jocelyn Vázquez Mercad visited an area near her home known for its large stray dog population. Through her work with Defensa Nacional de Lomitos, she regularly brings food and water to the dogs there and checks on their condition.
During one of those visits, she came across a mother dog caring for a litter of puppies.
At first, there seemed to be four puppies with the mother. Then a fifth, much smaller one appeared. Unlike the others, who had black markings in their fur, this little pup looked completely gray.
The mother and her puppies happily ate together, unaware that everything was about to change.
That same day, Mercad and the other rescuers decided to take the entire family back to their shelter, where they could stay safe until they were ready to be adopted.
The smallest puppy, who had trouble keeping pace with the others, chose to spend that first night curled up in his rescuer’s arms.
What no one realized then was that he was hiding a surprising secret.
The next day, the puppies were bathed so they could begin their new chapter fresh and clean.
But when rescuers started washing the little gray puppy, they were shocked by what they discovered.
He was not gray at all.
Under the dirt and grease, the pup’s fur was actually a bright, beautiful white.
Mercad later said they had no idea and were stunned when they realized his gray color was only grime. Once cleaned up, the puppy was given the name Polar.
The rest of the puppies, who had also been dulled by dirt, were cleaned as well. After a visit to the vet, all of them were declared healthy and ready for new beginnings.
Then Polar’s makeover video began to spread online, bringing attention to the litter and helping potential adopters notice them.
Mercad said Polar’s video ended up working wonders. Because of the exposure, three of the puppies have already found wonderful homes.
Rescuers are now hopeful that Polar, one remaining sibling, and their mother — who has since been spayed — will soon find loving families too.
Their future now looks brighter than ever.
Mercad said Polar’s story shows how even small acts of kindness can completely change an animal’s life, and that he, his siblings, and their mother all deserve the chance to be loved and safe in a real home.
