It started as a quiet morning at Bendigo Animal Relief Centre when a Good Samaritan arrived carrying an unexpected group of visitors — 15 tiny puppies.
The person explained they had been walking along a popular trail when one puppy suddenly appeared nearby. Curious, they looked around to see where the little dog had come from.
Moments later, more puppies began emerging until the walker realized there were over a dozen of them scattered around the area.
Unsure how to help so many animals at once, the Good Samaritan gathered the puppies and brought them straight to the shelter.
A Shelter Suddenly Filled With Puppies
When the puppies arrived at the center, staff members were both surprised and a little overwhelmed. Taking in such a large number of animals at once meant immediate medical care was needed.
The puppies were estimated to be about seven weeks old, which is still quite young to be separated from their mother.
All of them shared similar markings and appeared to be roughly the same age, leading rescuers to believe they were originally part of the same litter.
Every puppy received treatment for worms and parasites, and some needed additional care because they were underweight.
Sadly, One Puppy Didn’t Survive
Despite the rescue team’s efforts, one puppy was too weak and sadly passed away.
The remaining 14 puppies, however, began improving quickly. Within just a few days, they were gaining weight and growing stronger.
Staff members also noticed something encouraging about their behavior — the puppies were incredibly friendly.
They eagerly sought attention, wagged their tiny tails and happily chewed on anything they could find, typical of playful young pups.
Foster Homes Step In to Help
After stabilizing the puppies’ health, the shelter placed them into foster homes in pairs so they could continue growing in a loving environment.
Meanwhile, the team started searching for the puppies’ mother.
Their investigation revealed something surprising: the puppies actually came from two separate litters born only a few days apart.
A Happy Ending for the Family
Eventually, rescuers brought one of the mothers into their care and named her Mumma Sue.
The other mother dog remained with her owner, but the shelter covered the cost of her spay surgery to prevent more accidental litters in the future.
Today, Mumma Sue is thriving in a foster home, and many of the rescued puppies already have adopters waiting for them.
What started as a confusing discovery on a walking trail has turned into a heartwarming story — all thanks to one person who stopped to help when a group of tiny puppies needed it most. 🐶
