“You can’t help but smile!”
Caring for orphaned wild animals is never a one-person job. At Austin Wildlife Rescue (AWR), the whole community plays a role — and the donations that pour in, from dry dog food to cleaning supplies, are what keep the operation running and the animals thriving.
The staff is grateful for every single item that comes through the door. Paper towels, gloves, plastic bins, bags of kibble — it all adds up and it all matters. But there’s one particular donation that manages to bring a little extra joy to the team and the animals alike: a worn-out pair of jeans.
It might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of wildlife rehabilitation. But at AWR, old denim has become something of a treasure. The moment a pile of donated jeans arrives, the staff gets to work transforming them into cozy hammocks for the facility’s raccoons, squirrels, and opossums.
“That denim hammock life is elite-level animal comfort,” AWR shared on Facebook.
The concept is surprisingly practical. Once the pants legs are knotted shut, the jeans are clipped to the walls of the enclosures using carabiners, creating a snug, sling-like space for the animals to crawl into. And crawl in they do — often several at once.
“There are at least four raccoons in this pair, and the one on top isn’t the one hanging out the bottom,” AWR noted in one post.
Beyond the entertainment factor, there’s real science behind why it works so well. Fabric closely mimics the feeling of a natural den, offering warmth, softness, and a sense of security that helps young animals feel calm and protected during rehabilitation. And denim in particular holds up exceptionally well to tiny claws and curious paws without snagging, while still allowing enough airflow to keep things comfortable.
Other fabrics have been tried, but denim keeps proving itself as the best option for these small residents.
Donations of all kinds move AWR’s mission forward, and each one brings these babies one step closer to being released back into the wild. But somewhere along the way, a pile of old jeans became just as essential to that process as a bag of kibble or a box of gloves.
And there’s something quietly wonderful about that. A raccoon curled up inside a pair of well-worn jeans is a small but powerful image of what it looks like when a community shows up for the animals in its midst.
