“The keyboard is Lupa’s favorite toy …”
While most pigeons communicate with coos and chirps, Lupa, a 1-year-old rescued pigeon, prefers to use her tiny claws to send messages instead.
Lupa and her sister, Pupa, were just fledglings when their nest was destroyed, but fortunately, they were rescued by two kind-hearted humans in time. The girls were only a week old when they were found, and their parents immediately knew they were special.
“We rescued them off the street when they were less than a week old, fed them until they could eat on their own, and even taught them how to drink water,” Lupa’s parents shared on Instagram.
The sisters flourished under their care, quickly becoming part of the family.
“Hand-raised and imprinted pigeons can’t be released back into the wild, so it’s our responsibility to give them the best life we can,” Lupa’s parents explained. “They live with us, work with us, play with us, and go on adventures with us.”
Although Lupa enjoys the great outdoors, her favorite spot seems to be her humans’ home office, where she’s found making it difficult for them to work.
“Lupa’s favorite hobby is preventing me from getting any work done, but I love having her around,” her parents wrote. “Let’s see if we can find something to distract her.”
To solve the issue of Lupa’s constant keyboard trampling, her parents bought her a pastel-colored keyboard that perfectly matched her cage’s décor. Pupa got her own black keyboard as well, since she, too, enjoyed tapping away.
“They both love walking on keyboards, so now they each have one of their own!” her parents shared.
But Lupa’s keyboard wasn’t just for play. It was connected to a text messaging system that would notify her parents whenever she stepped on a key. A small camera also captured a photo of Lupa, which would be sent with each message. Her parents were delighted to receive these sweet updates whenever they left the house.
One day, when Lupa’s parents were out on an adventure, they checked their phones to find over 160 messages from Lupa. They couldn’t help but smile as they scrolled through the texts.
“The keyboard is Lupa’s favorite toy in her cage,” her parents wrote. “She usually sends a few messages when she’s bored, but today, she fell asleep.”
Lupa’s texting antics didn’t go unnoticed by her friends either. A group chat was created where Lupa’s messages were eagerly anticipated. Even on days when she sent dozens of texts, her friends were thrilled to receive them.
As for Pupa, her keyboard generates digital tarot card spreads instead of typed messages, offering a unique form of communication.
Both pigeons enjoy their special keyboards, and while it remains to be seen how their tech skills will develop, for now, Lupa and Pupa are content with their digital forms of expression.
Having overcome a challenging start in life, the two rescued sisters are now in the loving care of their parents, who celebrate their quirks and passions. Thanks to their special keyboards, Lupa and Pupa are able to communicate freely with the humans who adore them.
“[They’re] the best therapy,” Lupa’s parents wrote on Instagram.
