She’s been in the shelter for over 1,500 days.

Dog Who Waited Over Three Years for a Home Faces New Hurdle After Injury

Last June, Kylie, a dog who had spent over three years at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society, became the shelter’s longest resident. Day after day, she watched other dogs get adopted and go home, but she remained behind, waiting for her chance.

Then, a few months ago, Kylie’s dreams came true when a couple adopted her. She was finally going home, or so it seemed.

However, fate had other plans. Shortly after settling into her new life, Kylie suffered a torn ACL, an injury that required expensive surgery and recovery time. Since her new home was only accessible by stairs, her family made the difficult decision to return her to the shelter, despite their best efforts to keep her.

“They did everything they could to try to keep her, but it just wasn’t the right fit,” explained Julie Saraceno, a volunteer dog walker at the shelter.

After surgery and a full recovery, Kylie was once again able to run and play, but her time at the shelter stretched on. She’s now been there for over 1,500 days, but her spirit has never wavered.

One of the reasons Kylie struggled to find a home before was her need to be the only dog in the household. However, with the help of dedicated shelter staff and volunteers, Kylie has begun to bond with other dogs, opening up the possibility of her being adopted into a home with other pets.

Saraceno’s main hope for 2025 is for Kylie to find her forever family. “Kylie is the best, and she deserves to be the next dog to leave the shelter,” Saraceno said in a TikTok. All it takes is one person deciding to give Kylie the home she’s waited so long for.
