Andrea Chatham was driving down the road when she suddenly spotted something tiny and fluffy darting near the traffic. Realizing it was a small animal, she immediately pulled over to help.
When she stepped out of her car and began calling, she quickly realized the little creature was a kitten. But instead of running toward her, the kitten continued wandering dangerously close to the road, seemingly unaware that someone had stopped to rescue him.
As Chatham moved closer, the kitten finally noticed her and eagerly ran over. He seemed thrilled to see her, but something stood out — he wasn’t meowing or making much noise, and he hadn’t reacted when she first called to him. Chatham began to wonder whether the tiny kitten might be deaf.
“I have no clue what I am going to do with this little one, but I couldn’t just leave it,” Chatham wrote on TikTok.
The kitten, who was later named Sylvester, was in rough condition. His fur was dirty, and he was covered in fleas. Chatham couldn’t imagine how such a small kitten had managed to survive alone for as long as he had.
She brought Sylvester home, gave him a much-needed bath and began making plans for a veterinary visit. He also had ear mites and significant buildup in his ears. Fortunately, Chatham had previously worked as a veterinary technician, so she was able to begin caring for some of his issues herself.
Once Sylvester was safe and comfortable in his new surroundings, Chatham and her family started paying close attention to his hearing. At times, he appeared to respond to sounds, while at other moments he seemed completely unaware of them.
Eventually, a veterinarian confirmed that Sylvester was at least partially deaf or hard of hearing.
The discovery made his rescue feel even more remarkable. While living outside, Sylvester may not have been able to hear approaching cars or recognize other dangers around him. Had Chatham not spotted him on the road that day, the outcome could have been very different.
At first, Chatham wasn’t certain whether her family would be able to keep Sylvester. But as the days passed, the affectionate little kitten quickly made himself at home — and the possibility of saying goodbye became harder to imagine.
“The little boy is the sweetest ever,” Chatham wrote.
Sylvester has since snuggled his way into the hearts of his new family. Whether he can hear every sound around him or not no longer matters. After a frightening start to life, he now has exactly what he needed most: safety, affection and a family who loves him just the way he is.
