“[She’s] a wonderful girl with a tender heart.”
Down a quiet back road in the wooded outskirts of Staunton, Virginia, a dog later named Hope found herself in a heartbreaking situation. Pregnant, hungry and alone, she had been chained to a tree with a heavy metal collar, unable to escape or fend for herself. She desperately needed someone to notice her.
That someone arrived when an outdoorsman happened to pass through the area. Realizing the urgency of the situation, he contacted local animal control. Officers quickly responded, freed Hope and transported her to a nearby shelter — just in time for her to deliver eight healthy puppies.
Hope and her newborns needed a safe place to rest and recover, and they soon found it with Lori, an experienced foster parent working with Augusta Dog Adoptions. Lori welcomed the little family into her home without hesitation.
“Hope is adjusting beautifully and truly living up to her name,” Lori told The Dodo. “She’s incredibly gentle, affectionate and dedicated to her babies. She watches over them like any loving mother, and they’re growing fast and staying nice and round under her care.”
With more than 15 years of fostering experience, Lori knows that taking in animals isn’t always simple — but Hope has made the process wonderfully easy.
“She’s been the most grateful and loving dog,” Lori said. “From the moment she arrived, you could see the relief on her face. She knew she was finally warm, safe and cared for, and she’s just been overjoyed to have a quiet space, good food and her puppies beside her. I absolutely adore her.”
Hope and her pups will remain with Lori until they’re old enough to search for forever families. For the first time, Hope doesn’t just have to survive — she gets the chance to truly flourish.
“We’re watching her weight and hoping she’ll start putting on pounds now that she’s in a peaceful home with steady meals and lots of affection,” Lori said. “She has such a gentle soul, and watching her confidence grow each day has been amazing.”
