GIANTS Exhibition Brings Prehistoric Mega-Creatures to Birmingham This August

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will host the UK opening of GIANTS, a spectacular exhibition developed by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, featuring life-sized 3D models and partial skeletons of giant prehistoric animals that roamed the Earth after the dinosaursโ€™ extinction 66 million years ago.

Highlights include the fearsome Otodus megalodon โ€” the largest shark ever known, the majestic woolly mammoth, and the massive Gigantopithecus blacki, an Asian primate the size of three orangutans.

Opening on 2 August, the exhibition offers free entry for children under 15 and will later travel to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh in January.

Visitors will gain insights into paleontologyโ€™s fascinating world, exploring fossil discovery and reconstruction techniques. Immersive projections will transport audiences to the natural habitats of these colossal creatures.

Zak Mensah and Sara Wajid, co-chief executives of Birmingham Museums Trust, described GIANTS as an โ€œinspiring installationโ€ that captures the imagination with its โ€œmonumental scaleโ€ while delivering an urgent message about natureโ€™s fragility and sustainability.

Dr. Nick Fraser, keeper of natural sciences at National Museums Scotland, noted the exhibition highlights a โ€œrelatively neglectedโ€ period of Earthโ€™s history after the dinosaurs.
