GIANTS Exhibition Brings Prehistoric Mega-Creatures to Birmingham This August
Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will host the UK opening of GIANTS, a spectacular exhibition developed by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, featuring life-sized 3D models and partial skeletons of giant prehistoric animals that roamed the Earth after the dinosaurs’ extinction 66 million years ago.
Highlights include the fearsome Otodus megalodon — the largest shark ever known, the majestic woolly mammoth, and the massive Gigantopithecus blacki, an Asian primate the size of three orangutans.
Opening on 2 August, the exhibition offers free entry for children under 15 and will later travel to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh in January.
Visitors will gain insights into paleontology’s fascinating world, exploring fossil discovery and reconstruction techniques. Immersive projections will transport audiences to the natural habitats of these colossal creatures.
Zak Mensah and Sara Wajid, co-chief executives of Birmingham Museums Trust, described GIANTS as an “inspiring installation” that captures the imagination with its “monumental scale” while delivering an urgent message about nature’s fragility and sustainability.
Dr. Nick Fraser, keeper of natural sciences at National Museums Scotland, noted the exhibition highlights a “relatively neglected” period of Earth’s history after the dinosaurs.
