For several years, visitors to the shores of Lake Arenal in Costa Rica have been witnessing an unusual friendship between birds that normally would not be expected to spend much time together.
At the center of the story is a colorful macaw who, after losing his longtime mate, appears to have found companionship among a flock of vultures.
His Story Began With a Tragic Loss
According to Ronald Zuñiga Zuñiga, who works around Lake Arenal, the macaw lost his mate roughly four years ago.
A friend of Zuñiga reportedly witnessed the accident and said the bird was struck by a car.
The loss was especially significant because macaws commonly form long-lasting pair bonds, often remaining with the same partner for many years.
Afterward, locals began noticing a clear change in the surviving bird’s behavior.
He Started Spending Time With Vultures
Rather than joining another macaw, the widowed bird began associating with vultures around the lake.
Zuñiga said the unusual friendship has continued for about three years.
Videos from the area show the bright macaw standing alongside the much darker birds, seemingly comfortable as part of their group.
The sight is striking, especially in a region where flocks of macaws are not unusual.
Yet this particular bird appears to prefer companions of a very different kind.
He Even Seems to Have Changed His Eating Habits
Macaws normally eat foods such as fruits, seeds and nuts.
But life with vultures appears to have influenced this bird’s behavior around food as well.
Footage has shown him joining the flock at meals and even competing for what appears to be part of a dead fish.
Whether the macaw has truly adapted his diet or is simply taking advantage of whatever his new companions are eating is unclear.
Either way, his willingness to join them suggests he has become remarkably comfortable in their company.
Locals Believe He Found a New Family
The unusual relationship has not been formally studied, so there is no scientific explanation for exactly why the macaw chose vultures as companions.
