She never would’ve made it on her own ..
A quiet day in southeastern Virginia turned into an urgent wildlife rescue after a passerby spotted a tiny raccoon peeking out from a storm drain.
At first, the animal was easy to miss. But after noticing movement near an empty sidewalk, the Good Samaritan looked closer and saw the young raccoon hiding beneath the street.
She appeared frightened, injured and unable to move normally.
The Raccoon Was Limping and Alone
The little raccoon moved cautiously from one end of the storm drain to the other.
Her limp made it clear that something was seriously wrong.
Although wildlife sightings are not unusual in the area, this animal was clearly struggling and seemed far too young to be dealing with the situation on her own.
Fortunately, two people nearby decided not to leave her there.
Two Strangers Stopped to Help
According to Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge, the rescuers happened to be nearby in a Zoomin Groomin van when they noticed what was happening.
They quickly stepped in, safely captured the raccoon and drove her to the wildlife rehabilitation center.
Their decision to stop would prove crucial.
Once the raccoon arrived, staff were finally able to examine her properly.
The Extent of Her Injuries Was Shocking
The young raccoon had suffered multiple serious injuries.
Wildlife rehabilitators discovered that she had three broken legs as well as a fracture to her femur.
For such a small animal, the amount of trauma was devastating.
Staff were left wondering how long she had been trying to survive alone while dealing with so much pain.
They named her Delilah.
Delilah Still Had Plenty of Fight Left
Despite her injuries, Delilah quickly showed that she had not lost her personality.
As caregivers treated her wounds and settled her into a temporary enclosure, they discovered that the tiny raccoon was surprisingly feisty.
Her rescuers described her as full of the classic raccoon attitude and said her strong spirit was encouraging to see.
Even after everything she had endured, Delilah was still very much fighting.
Her Recovery Is Only Just Beginning
It has only been a few days since Delilah was rescued, and she still has a long healing process ahead.
She will need continued treatment, close monitoring and plenty of rest as her broken bones recover.
Fortunately, she is now surrounded by experienced wildlife professionals who can provide the care she was missing in the storm drain.
The Goal Is to Return Her to the Wild
Delilah will remain at Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge until she is healthy and strong enough to live independently again.
If her recovery continues successfully, the ultimate goal is to release her back into the wild.
Until then, staff will continue giving her round-the-clock care and watching closely as she regains her strength.
A Rescue Made Possible by People Who Stopped
For the rehabilitation team, Delilah’s story is also a reminder of how important ordinary people can be in wildlife rescue.
If the Good Samaritans had simply walked past, her situation could have ended very differently.
Instead, they noticed an animal in distress, stopped what they were doing and made sure she reached professionals who could help.
Now, Delilah has something she did not have while hiding beneath that sidewalk: a real chance to heal and return to the life she was meant to live.
