An otter was sighted foraging for food in Plymouth Sound.

Fisherman Andy Melvin recounted that while fishing at his “regular spot” on West Hoe around 05:50 BST, he observed the creature in the water.

Initially mistaking it for a seal due to its size, Melvin noticed its distinctive tail, prompting a reconsideration.

After reviewing a video captured by Mr. Melvin, the Devon Wildlife Trust affirmed the creature’s identity as an otter, noting its characteristic head movements and diving behavior.

Genuine Fortune

The trust emphasized that otters are known to explore coastal waters in pursuit of food.

Reflecting on his experience, Mr. Melvin remarked, “The otter made eye contact with me before gracefully diving beneath the surface, then it proceeded towards the [River] Plym, presumably its origin.”

He continued, “While fishing, I’ve encountered seals on occasion. However, upon observing the tail, it was immediately apparent that this was not a seal. There was a moment of mutual acknowledgment between the otter and me, then it swiftly darted away.”

Melvin noted that this was his first sighting of an otter off the Plymouth coast.
