A Troubling Discovery at School
One morning, a teacher at a Florida school noticed something moving near the soccer field.
An opossum had become tightly tangled in one of the nets and was unable to free herself. Realizing the frightened animal needed experienced help, the teacher contacted wildlife rescuer Cat Clifford.
Clifford, who works with Back To Nature Wildlife Refuge, had handled many difficult rescues before. Still, this situation required extra care.
The trapped opossum was not alone.
Eleven Tiny Lives Depending on Her
Clinging closely to their mother were eleven baby opossums, known as joeys.
The mother hissed and acted defensively when Clifford approached, but her behavior was not aggressive without reason. She was frightened, trapped and desperate to protect the tiny babies depending on her.
Clifford understood that every movement had to be slow and deliberate. A sudden struggle could tighten the net or cause one of the babies to fall.
Patience Begins to Build Trust
Working carefully, Clifford started cutting away the strands wrapped around the opossum’s body.
At first, the mother remained tense and watchful. But as the rescue continued, her fear slowly began to fade. She stopped struggling and appeared to understand that the person beside her was not a threat.
Instead, Clifford was trying to protect the very thing that mattered most to her—her family.
With all eleven joeys still safely attached, the mother allowed her rescuer to continue.
Finally Free
After several delicate moments, Clifford removed the last pieces of netting and freed the opossum completely.
The rescue ended without injury, but Clifford did not want to take any chances. She transported the mother and her babies to the wildlife refuge, where the entire family received a thorough health examination.
Thankfully, every member of the little family was found to be in good condition.
A Safe Return Awaits
Once they are ready, the mother and her joeys will be released back into the wild, where she can continue raising them in their natural home.
The encounter was a powerful reminder that frightened animals are often simply trying to survive and protect those they love.
All the mother opossum wanted was to return to caring for her babies. Once she realized Clifford wanted the same thing, fear gave way to trust.
A Second Chance for a Wild Family
After more than two decades of rescuing wildlife, Clifford still finds meaning in every call she receives.
Each rescue offers an opportunity to protect a vulnerable animal, repair the harm caused by an unexpected danger and return a wild life to where it belongs.
