One-Eyed African Grey Parrot Gets Custom Aviary So She Can Thrive

A special new aviary has been built at Hoo Zoo in Telford to help a much-loved African Grey parrot named Monica live comfortably after losing an eye.

Monica, who is unable to fly due to wing pinioning by previous owners, has lived at the zoo for several years. Earlier this year, she became ill and lost one of her eyes, prompting staff to design a space tailored specifically to her needs.

Her new enclosure includes:

  • Low-level perches she can easily reach
  • Food and water bowls placed on the ground
  • A soft bark mulch floor for digging and exploring
  • A small β€œcat flap”–style door so she can move in and out and stay warm when she wants

Zoo owner Will Dorrell said the update was created to balance accessibility with enrichment.

β€œAfter losing her eye, she adapted incredibly well,” he said. β€œWe wanted to give her a space that suits her needs but also gives her feathered friends more space to fly and play.”

Keeper Sarah Holt added that the setup allows Monica to stay with her flock while still feeling safe and independent.

β€œShe’s got her own little flap to go in and out, and warm, low perches so she can move around comfortably,” Holt said.

The new aviary wasn’t built just for Monica β€” it also gives the rest of the parrots more room to spread their wings and enjoy a more natural environment.

Monica, who was once a pet before being rehomed at the zoo, has become a favorite among staff.

β€œShe’s been part of our zoo family for years,” Dorrell said. β€œShe’s got an amazing personality, and this really feels like an early Christmas present for her and the flock.”
