“[T]he students are calmer when he’s there.”

At 14 years old, a sweet senior dog named Nino has already experienced his share of heartbreak. But thanks to one caring woman and a classroom full of little friends, his golden years have become something truly special.

Nino’s life changed when his beloved owner, Linda, passed away. Fortunately, Linda’s friend, Jamie White, was determined to make sure the elderly pup would never have to face the world alone.

Without hesitation, White welcomed Nino into her family, giving him a safe home filled with love.

At first, everything seemed perfect.

White’s children were home from college for summer break, and Nino received plenty of cuddles, companionship and attention.

But when summer ended and the kids returned to college, things became a little quieter.

And Nino began to feel lonely.

White runs Play to Learn Preschool from the lower level of her home. Every morning, when she headed downstairs to teach her students, Nino would become upset about being left behind.

Watching him struggle with the separation, White started wondering whether her little classroom might have room for one more student — one with four paws and a wagging tail.

Before bringing him along, she reached out to the preschool parents to explain her idea.

“I just put it out to the parents and said, ‘He’s the greatest dog. He’s like a stuffed animal. He’s deaf. For what it’s worth, he has no teeth. He has one molar in the back,’” White told The Dodo.

The parents agreed, and Nino was officially invited to spend a day with the children.

What happened next was even sweeter than White could have imagined.

The moment Nino joined the classroom, it became clear that he’d found exactly where he belonged.

Despite being surrounded by 12 energetic children between the ages of 3 and 4, the gentle senior dog remained completely relaxed.

“[N]ot every dog would be fine with twelve 3- and 4-year-olds petting him all day,” White explained. “But this dog is just so unbothered, and I do think it helps that he’s deaf and a little bit older.”

But Nino wasn’t the only one benefiting from his new routine.

White soon noticed something remarkable about her students.

Whenever Nino was nearby, the children seemed to become more thoughtful, gentle and attentive. Even during their most energetic moments, they began adjusting their behavior to make their furry friend comfortable.

“It was just the most beautiful thing, because the students are calmer when he’s there,” White said. “They’re just really interested in caring for him. I’ve just seen a different side of them when he’s there.”

Without saying a single word, Nino was teaching the children lessons about kindness, patience and compassion.

Before long, his occasional classroom visits became a daily tradition.

Now, every morning, Nino accompanies White downstairs, ready to spend another wonderful day with his tiny best friends.

And he even has his own special way of welcoming everyone.

“They come in in the morning, and he stands at the door and greets each one, [booping] each one of them with his little nose,” White shared.

Throughout the day, Nino happily participates in classroom activities in his own adorable way.

Sometimes, he relaxes while the children read books to him. Other times, he enjoys being pulled around in a little wagon, soaking up all the attention from his devoted classmates.

For a dog who once felt lonely when the house became quiet, life couldn’t be more different now.

He’s surrounded by children who adore him, a teacher who makes sure he’s comfortable and a daily routine that gives him plenty of companionship.

And for White, watching Nino thrive brings an especially meaningful feeling.

She often thinks about Linda, the woman who loved him before he became part of her family.

Although Linda isn’t here to see Nino’s new life, White believes she would have been overjoyed to know how much happiness her beloved dog is bringing to so many children.

“I do like to think Linda would be pleased,” White said. “This would be a dream come true for her that people would recognize this connection that humans and animals have, and even that her Nino would be getting all of this attention. She would just be tickled.”

What began as a simple solution to a lonely dog’s sadness has blossomed into something beautiful for an entire preschool.

Nino found companionship, the children gained a gentle furry friend, and everyone discovered just how powerful the bond between people and animals can be.

At 14 years old, Nino may be the oldest member of the classroom — but he’s also one of its most beloved.
