In the busy streets of Zurich, it’s easy for anyone — even wildlife — to lose their way. Recently, a simple act of kindness helped a confused swan safely return home after she became trapped along the city’s waterfront.
A Swan in Trouble
While walking near downtown Zurich, entrepreneur and author Clive Bucher noticed something unusual. A lone swan had wandered away from a nearby canal but couldn’t figure out how to get back.
Because of the railings, steps and barriers lining the waterfront, the bird was stuck on the wrong side. She paced anxiously, clearly confused about how to reach the water again.
Seeing her distress, Bucher decided he couldn’t simply ignore the situation.
Guiding Her Back Home
Bucher carefully approached the swan and gently encouraged her to move in the right direction. Step by step, he guided the bird along the path until she reached the canal again.
Waiting in the water was her partner, who had remained nearby the whole time.
Once reunited, the swan quickly returned to the canal where she belonged.
For Bucher, knowing she was safe again was reward enough.
An Unexpected Reunion
About a week later, Bucher returned to the same location — and something surprising happened.
The swan recognized him.
She swam directly toward him, accompanied by the same partner who had been waiting for her before. The pair lingered near him for a moment, calmly floating beside the edge of the canal.
Bucher later described the encounter as feeling like a quiet thank-you.
A Small Act With Big Meaning
The moment served as a reminder that even small gestures can make a big difference — especially for animals that share our cities.
What took only a few minutes for Bucher meant everything to the swan who had lost her way.
Sometimes, a little kindness is all it takes to help someone find their way home. 🦢
