Sea Turtle Photobombs Family Photo Shoot in Stunning Surprise Moment
On July 3, a very pregnant sea turtle made her way ashore on Sanibel Island, Florida, in search of the perfect nesting spot. What she found was a picturesque patch of beach โ the exact same one a human mother had just chosen for a family photo session. Unfazed by the unexpected company, the determined sea turtle stole the scene in a truly unforgettable photobomb.
โI was shocked at what I was seeing,โ said Brooke Benjamin, co-owner and photographer at B+A Coastal Photo & Video, who was behind the camera during the magical moment.
Benjamin was capturing photos of her clients as they stepped into the ocean when the sea turtle poked her head above the water, then gently bumped into one clientโs leg โ a nudge he initially mistook for a rock.

To everyoneโs amazement, the turtle powered forward, making her way right past the family with surprising speed and grace.
โWe did not disturb or scare her, and we respect the fact that the beach is her home,โ Benjamin said. โShe was completely unfazed that we were in her presence.โ
Benjamin and her clients quietly moved back to give the sea turtle space. The mother turtle paid them no mind as she continued her mission, scaling the beach in under a minute to the nesting spot she had already chosen โ right where the family had been standing.

Wanting to avoid disrupting the important moment, Benjamin moved the photo session away from the nesting site. As they wrapped up and left the beach about 30 minutes later, the turtle was still hard at work laying her eggs.
โThis session was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence,โ Benjamin later wrote on Instagram. โSeeing her beauty and size in person was absolutely mesmerizing.โ
According to the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, most nesting turtles in the area are loggerheads, a vulnerable species that typically lay eggs between dusk and dawn. A daylight sighting like this is exceptionally rare.
Loggerhead sea turtles often return to lay three to six nests per season, and this majestic mama is likely to return to Sanibelโs sands again.
As surreal as the moment was, Benjamin confirmed the photos are completely unedited โ the only thing not entirely genuine, she joked, was how calm her clients appeared in the shots.
โWe were all startled by its massive size,โ she said. โWe are so grateful she felt comfortable enough to grace us with her presence.โ
