Two years ago, Tracey Ferrin received an unexpected call from her husband โ€” he and his coworkers had found a stray dog wandering near their workplace.

โ€œThey gave the dog some water and food,โ€ Ferrin, a digital creator and TikTok storyteller, told The Dodo. โ€œThey tried contacting animal shelters, but every one of them was full.โ€

Not wanting to leave the dog outside, her husband asked if he could bring him home โ€” not just temporarily, but permanently.

โ€œI said, โ€˜Absolutely, bring him home,โ€™โ€ Ferrin recalled. โ€œIn 20 years of marriage, heโ€™s never been the one to bring home a pet.โ€

When the dog, later named Buddy, arrived, he was terrified to step indoors.

โ€œHe just froze,โ€ Ferrin said. โ€œIt was like his paws didnโ€™t know what they were touching. I donโ€™t think he had ever been inside a house before.โ€

Determined to make him feel safe, Ferrin and her family moved gently and spoke softly. โ€œWe got down on the floor with him because we didnโ€™t want to scare him,โ€ she said.

To help him settle in, they gave Buddy a long, warm bath. โ€œIt lasted about 30 minutes,โ€ Ferrin said. โ€œWe kept rinsing until we stopped seeing fleas come off him.โ€

Once clean, Buddy found comfort in an old kennel the family used for training their other dogs. โ€œHe stayed in there for days,โ€ Ferrin explained. โ€œWe fed him in the kennel and kept the door open so he knew he could come out when he was ready.โ€

At first, their English bulldog, Sissy, wasnโ€™t too sure about the newcomer โ€” but soon, the two became best friends. Buddy also formed a strong bond with Ferrinโ€™s teenage son, Noah.

โ€œThey really connected,โ€ Ferrin said. โ€œOnce his fear faded, Buddy became so sweet and affectionate.โ€

The family knew Buddy had finally accepted his new life the day he cuddled up to Sissy on Ferrinโ€™s bed. โ€œThey looked like they were hugging,โ€ she said. โ€œThat was the moment I knew he felt at home.โ€

Today, Buddy is a confident, loving part of the family โ€” surrounded by the people (and pups) who once gave him a second chance. โ€œHeโ€™s just the best,โ€ Ferrin said. โ€œWe canโ€™t imagine life without him.โ€
