Wild Mouflons Roam Prague Hospital Grounds, Bringing Unexpected Therapy

Nestled beside a protected forest, the hospital often sees visits from local wildlife. One recent video captured an unusual sight: mouflons, a species of wild sheep native to the region, clashing on the hospital grounds.
During rutting season, male mouflons spar for dominance, using their thick horns to headbutt one another — a natural display of strength and skill. While it might seem odd to see wild sheep near a hospital, at Thomayer University Hospital, the herd is more than just tolerated — it’s celebrated.
“Mouflons are an integral part of our hospital and are our uncrowned mascot,” the hospital wrote online. “Our herd now numbers around one hundred.”
The presence of these animals goes beyond novelty; they provide a form of natural therapy. Their playful and gentle nature can lift spirits, brighten days, and even help patients feel more at ease.
Some visitors have reported choosing this hospital specifically to be near the mouflons. Hospital staff note that the animals’ presence has a calming effect, providing comfort not only to patients but also to employees.
“Every year, new cubs are born, and they cheer up almost everyone,” the hospital explained. “For patients — and not just them — these four-legged creatures have a positive influence and can even support recovery through a kind of natural therapy.”
