They never expected that.
A couple in Australia recently got quite the surprise when their dogs began barking furiously outside. Rushing to investigate, they found an unexpected visitor on their patio β a frightened koala pressed tightly against the glass door, cornered by the curious pups.
Unsure of what else to do, the homeowners slid the door open β and to their astonishment, the koala bolted straight inside and headed for the bedroom.
With a wild animal now hiding in their home, the couple quickly contacted WIRES Wildlife Rescue for assistance. Rescuer Tanya soon arrived, equipped with a containment bag and plenty of experience handling scared wildlife.
βFortunately, he stayed fairly calm,β Tanya explained to The Dodo. βOnce the barking dogs were out of sight, he must have felt a lot safer. Since he was on a bed and not in a tree, there wasnβt much for him to grab onto, so securing him was simple.β
The rescued koala was affectionately named Mr. Stainfield, after the street where he was found. Tanya transported him to the Northern Rivers Koala Hospital, where veterinarians gave him a full health check. Thankfully, Mr. Stainfield was perfectly healthy and ready to return to the wild. He was later released in a familiar area with plenty of eucalyptus trees, food, and water.

Koalas like Mr. Stainfield face increasing dangers due to habitat loss, road accidents, and dog attacks. The Australian Koala Foundation lists them as endangered in several regions, including Queensland, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory.
Tanya urges locals to help protect these iconic animals by keeping pets indoors overnight and staying alert for wildlife when driving, especially at dawn and dusk. And if anyone encounters an injured or distressed animal, the best thing to do is to contact WIRES or a nearby wildlife rescue organization right away.
Thanks to the quick-thinking homeowners and WIRESβ expert help, Mr. Stainfieldβs unexpected house visit ended happily β and heβs now back where he belongs, high in the treetops.
