One morning in Canada, a homeowner stepping outside for the day was startled to find an unexpected guest hanging — quite literally — from their front porch ceiling.
The surprise visitor wasn’t perched on the porch, but rather stuck halfway through it. At some point during the night, a curious raccoon exploring the home’s attic had tried to make a quick exit. Spotting an opening where a light fixture had been, he attempted to squeeze his pudgy body through the small gap — only to become hopelessly wedged in place.
By the time morning came, the raccoon was dangling awkwardly from the ceiling, unable to pull himself free.
“The homeowner found him there and called us,” said Max McVety of Forest City Wildlife Control in an interview with The Dodo. “He was just hanging there — raccoons are usually pretty good at squeezing through tight spaces, but he didn’t have anything to grab onto to push himself out.”
When McVety arrived, he set up a ladder beneath the trapped raccoon and offered him a rope to hold onto. With a gentle tug and a bit of teamwork, the raccoon managed to wriggle his way through the opening and climb down to safety. Moments later, he hopped to the ground and scurried off, no worse for wear.

Unlike most wildlife rescues that require direct handling or catch poles — both stressful for the animal — this operation relied purely on patience and problem-solving.
“It worked out really well,” McVety said. “He just needed a little help.”
After the incident, the homeowner sealed off the attic entrance to prevent future furry visitors from making similar escape attempts. Still, the rescue left quite an impression on McVety.
“We see all kinds of strange situations,” he said. “But this one was definitely unique — not your everyday rescue.”
