After Six Lonely Years in the Woods, One Cat Finally Gets His Happy Ending
Rosa Avila has encountered her fair share of heartbreaking situations during her time rescuing animals, but when she first laid eyes on Jaxon, she knew his story was different — and it hit her hard.
“I kept spotting him in the woods,” Avila shared in a video with The Dodo. “I couldn’t stop wondering — why was he out there alone?”
Jaxon had been surviving in the forest near Avila’s home, and according to her landlord, he’d been there for six years. His family had moved away and abandoned him, leaving the loyal cat to fend for himself.
It was clear to Avila that Jaxon was in poor shape — his health was declining, and the weather was starting to turn cold. She knew gaining his trust would take time, but she was determined to help him before it was too late.
“His eyes were always shut tight, red and irritated,” she said. “I wasn’t even sure if he could see.”
Avila began leaving food and building shelters in the woods to help Jaxon feel safe. She visited every morning, gently showing him he could rely on her. Over time, Jaxon slowly let his guard down.
“I started talking to him, inching closer each day,” Avila recalled. “Then one day, he just let me pet him. I asked him, ‘Are you going to let me pick you up?’”
When she finally lifted him — gently holding the back of his neck — Jaxon didn’t resist. It was as if, after six years of solitude, he was finally ready to be saved.
“He seemed to want the help,” she said.
Avila rushed Jaxon to the vet, where she learned he needed surgery. After the procedure, everything changed. Jaxon could open his eyes — and for the first time in years, he could truly see.
With his health restored, Jaxon’s personality blossomed. He became a sweet, affectionate companion who soaked up every bit of love and attention — making up for the years he’d spent alone.
Soon after, Jaxon found a forever home where he could live out his days in comfort and peace. His long wait was finally over.
“He held on for six years,” Avila said. “Now, he’s where he belongs.”
