As spring approached and the weather began to warm after winter, a Reddit user named Carozzoni decided it was time to start working in his garden. A few weeks earlier, he had grown lettuce plants from seeds indoors, and the improving conditions meant they were ready to be planted outside.

While digging small holes by hand to place the young lettuce plants into the soil, Carozzoni had an unexpected encounter. As he began filling the soil back in, a small toad suddenly emerged from beneath the ground, brushing dirt from its face. The surprise caused Carozzoni to jump back briefly before laughing and greeting the tiny visitor.

The toad had been buried just beneath the spot where the lettuce plant was placed and ended up moving forward with the seedling resting on its back, appearing to give it a short ride. Carozzoni found the moment both surprising and charming.

Toads often bury themselves in loose soil during winter so they can hibernate safely, usually reappearing between March and April. It was unclear whether this particular toad was fully ready to wake up, but Carozzoni was happy to see it regardless.

He explained that the toad had likely been living in the garden for several years, helping naturally by feeding on pests such as mosquitoes, slugs, and snails. Carozzoni described the toad as a familiar and welcome companion that coexists peacefully while helping to care for the garden.
