He spent the night in the cold and snow.
One winter morning in Pennsylvania, a family stepped outside and noticed something unusual beneath their truck. Curled up in the snow was a frightened turkey, trying desperately to stay warm.
The bird was shaking from the freezing temperatures, clearly exhausted after spending the night outside.
Without hesitation, the family brought him indoors to warm up and figure out how to help.
A Cold Night in the Snow
The family suspected the turkey had fallen from one of the transport trucks that occasionally passed their house at night.
They had seen trucks carrying turkeys driving by before and believed the bird may have escaped during one of those trips.
After likely spending the entire night outside in below-freezing temperatures, the exhausted turkey had crawled under the truck for shelter.
A Sanctuary Steps In
The family contacted Lancaster Farm Sanctuary for help, and the rescue team quickly agreed to take the bird in.
Once he arrived at the sanctuary, staff members named him William.
Rescuers discovered he was in rough shape:
- Extremely cold and weak
- Frostbite on his snood (the fleshy part above a turkeyโs beak)
- Dirty and stressed
- Missing part of his beak, suggesting factory-farm conditions
The team believed William had almost certainly escaped from a factory farm transport truck.

Learning to Feel Safe Again
At first, William seemed frightened and withdrawn. He spent about a month in quarantine so he could recover and slowly adjust to his new environment.
During that time, he began to relax as caregivers provided warmth, food and gentle attention.
Eventually, the once-terrified bird started to show his personality.
A New Life With Friends
Today, William lives happily with two other turkeys at the sanctuary.
Instead of cold pavement and transport trucks, his days are now filled with:

- Fresh air and open outdoor space
- A warm, clean shelter
- Friendly turkey companions
Rescuers say William is curious and surprisingly chatty. He often follows the two female turkeys around, watching everything they do.
For a bird who may never have experienced the outdoors before, the trees, grass and open sky are entirely new.

A Second Chance Thanks to Kindness
When the family first found William under their truck, he was cold, frightened and close to giving up.
But their quick decision to help changed everything.
Now, William gets to live the rest of his life peacefully โ surrounded by friends, safety and the simple joys of being a turkey.
