“I couldn’t believe my eyes.”
Last week, staff at a Southern California school noticed a small black-and-tan dog wandering around campus. She was friendly, but the employees grew worried — especially when she came back the following morning.
Not only was she clearly hungry, but one glance at her told them she had recently given birth. Every time she finished eating and disappeared into the neighborhood, the staff feared she was heading back to puppies no one could find.
“She would appear and then dash off again, and we had no clue where she was going,” rescuer Suzette Hall shared on Facebook.
One of the school employees, Lori, made sure the dog — whom they began calling Mama — never missed a meal. But after several unsuccessful attempts to secure her, Lori reached out to Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29.
Hall rushed to the school, though Mama was nowhere in sight. Soon, she noticed another dog slipping in and out of a nearby duplex — and followed her instincts.
Inside the entryway, Hall spotted Mama huddled by a door. When she asked the residents whether the little dog belonged to them, their answer made her heart drop.
“No,” they explained. “She’s a stray. Her puppies are under the house.”
What started as a simple rescue had suddenly become a mission to save newborns in a dangerous place.
Hall and Lori searched beneath the home and spotted six tiny puppies tucked deep inside the crawlspace — much too far to reach. The narrow opening wouldn’t allow either rescuer to squeeze through. Just when they needed help most, they met Jeremy.
“He was incredible,” Hall wrote. “He laid flat on the ground, crawled all the way under there, and the only tool he had was a mop!”
Using the mop handle, Jeremy gently guided each pup forward until Hall and Lori could scoop them up. One by one, six little babies were pulled to safety — tired, dirty and softly crying, but alive.
Now there was just one more rescue to complete.
Mama was frantic, running in circles and searching everywhere for her missing babies. It took hours before she finally calmed down enough to step into Hall’s humane trap — and then everything changed.
“The second she saw her puppies again, it was pure magic,” Hall said. “They scrambled toward her, tails wagging, and she just melted. She finally relaxed.”
The reunited family was taken to a veterinary partner for care, then placed into a loving foster home. Mama rarely lets her babies out of sight, and they’re growing stronger and more confident every day.
They still have a few weeks before they’re ready to find forever homes — but for now, they’re exactly where they’re meant to be.
“A miracle family,” Hall said. “Saved just in time.”
