Jersey Zoo has welcomed a new resident with a fluffy tail and a charming personality.
A five-year-old red panda named Esha has officially moved into her new home after arriving from Peak Wildlife Park in Staffordshire. Zoo staff say she has adapted quickly to her surroundings and is already becoming comfortable in her new environment.
Settling In Beautifully
Since arriving at the zoo, Esha has been exploring her enclosure and getting to know her new keepers.
According to zoo staff, the young red panda has settled in remarkably well and continues to grow more confident each day.
Mary-Anne Jones from Jersey Zoo said Esha is becoming increasingly relaxed both in her habitat and around the people caring for her.
An Animal Facing Serious Threats
While Esha is now enjoying a safe home, her wild relatives continue to face an uncertain future.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimates that fewer than 10,000 red pandas remain in the wild, and the species is listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Habitat destruction, human activity, and illegal poaching have all contributed to the decline of wild red panda populations.
Masters of Life in the Trees
Native to the forests of the eastern Himalayas, red pandas spend much of their lives among the treetops.
Their diet consists mainly of bamboo, although they also eat fruits, berries, insects, and other plant material when available.
One of their most fascinating adaptations is their incredible climbing ability.
With six digits on each front paw—including an enlarged wrist bone that functions like a thumb—red pandas can grip branches with ease and are even able to climb down trees headfirst.
