Efforts to capture a runaway emu near Spilsby have been severely hindered by people chasing the bird in 4×4 vehicles, Lincolnshire Police have reported. The large bird has been spotted multiple times in the area over the past few weeks, but authorities have not yet determined when or where it escaped from. The National Exotics Animal Rescue Service (NEARS) was enlisted to help in the rescue, but the operation has been complicated by well-meaning members of the public trying to intervene.
The Boston area police team took to Facebook to warn that the emu’s rescue is being delayed by people pursuing the animal, causing further distress. They emphasized that such actions could lead to the emu being frightened and potentially running into a nearby road, which would put both the bird and motorists at risk. The police and NEARS have both asked the public to refrain from chasing or approaching the animal, as it could undermine the efforts to safely recapture it.
NEARS specifically urged people to allow them and their partners to manage the situation to ensure the best possible outcome for the emu. They explained that the more the animal is chased or stressed, the harder it becomes to safely capture it. In the Facebook post, NEARS reassured the public that they are doing everything they can to bring the emu back to safety.
Lincolnshire Police further requested that anyone who spots the emu or has any information regarding its whereabouts contact NEARS directly via Facebook. They reiterated the importance of leaving the rescue to the professionals to ensure the emu’s safe return.
