Anthony’s soft purr is now one of the many happy sounds at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah.

These days, the tabby cat can often be found curled up beside another cat, relaxed and content. When a caregiver walks in with one of his favorite treats, Anthony calmly stretches, gets up and makes his way over with confidence.

But he wasn’t always so comfortable around people.

Anthony came to the sanctuary with 70 other cats after being rescued from an overcrowded home. At first, he preferred the company of other cats and kept his distance from humans.

He enjoyed resting near his feline friends and quietly watching everything from a safe spot. Other cats felt familiar to him, but people were still confusing and intimidating.

Caregivers soon discovered that Anthony’s withdrawn behavior may not have been caused only by fear. A veterinary exam showed that his mouth was inflamed and painful, making it difficult for him to eat. He needed several teeth removed.

After the dental work, Anthony slowly began to change.

He seemed more comfortable, showed more interest in food and started spending more time around people. As he healed, his caregivers helped him eat soft food each day, often spoon-feeding him his meals.

What began as medical care turned into a way to build trust.

Meal by meal, Anthony learned that people could bring comfort instead of stress. Little by little, he began accepting gentle touches, then chin scratches and soft brushing.

Eventually, he stopped running away when people came near. Instead, he started staying close.

As the pain in his mouth faded, Anthony’s sweet personality began to shine. He became more affectionate with caregivers, even when they weren’t holding food.

Then one day, he surprised everyone by climbing into a caregiver’s lap β€” something no one had expected from him.

Now, Anthony enjoys attention, treats and cozy time with both people and cats. He still loves food, but he has also learned to love affection.

Thanks to patience, medical care and kindness, Anthony no longer has to watch life from a distance. He is finally comfortable, loved and ready to enjoy every purr-filled moment.
