On New Yearβs Day 2025, Matt McEntire, a volunteer with the Humane Society of North Texas, was enjoying a peaceful walk with his dog, Dublin, when something unexpected happened. As they strolled through a park, faint whimpers caught their attention coming from a trash can.
βHe heard the soft cries and realized puppies were in desperate need,β said Cassie Davidson, senior director of marketing and communications at the Humane Society.

Eight Abandoned Puppies
Inside the trash can were eight tiny puppies, huddled together, cold, frightened, and abandoned. McEntire acted quickly, carrying them home in multiple trips until all were safely rescued.
βThe puppies were in critical conditionβdehydrated, starving, and infested with worms, parasites, and fleas,β Davidson explained. βWithout care, their fragile health could have worsened quickly, especially being exposed to the cold.β

Immediate Medical Care
Once at the Humane Society, the puppies received urgent veterinary attention. In a nod to their Irish rescuer, the team gave the puppies Irish-inspired names: Phineas, OβMalley, Lorcan, Finnegan, Paddy, Keeva, Guinness, and Dublin.
On the Road to Recovery

Davidson shared that most of the pups are now thriving and will be ready for adoption soon. Two are still in the medical area but are steadily improving under attentive care.

βThanks to Mattβs quick thinking, all eight puppies are now safe, loved, and on their way to finding forever homes,β Davidson said.
A Happy Ending

The rescue highlights the difference one caring volunteer can make. With proper care, the little pups are set to grow healthy, happy, and ready to bring joy to their future families.
