They were so small 💔
Before the Central Missouri Humane Society opens each day, cleaners arrive early to prepare the building for staff, visitors and animals.
One recent morning, a member of the cleaning crew was taking garbage out to the dumpsters when he noticed an unexpected sight — a cardboard box labeled “mandarins.” But instead of fruit, the box held a tiny family in need.
Inside were a mother cat and four newborn kittens.
The cleaner quickly told shelter staff, who had just arrived for the day. A manager went to get a carrier, while Camryn Long, the shelter’s digital marketing and fundraising coordinator, rushed outside to make sure the cats stayed safe and didn’t scatter.
When Long looked into the box, she saw the mother cat lying calmly while her kittens nursed beside her. Despite being abandoned in such a frightening place, the mama cat was gentle and friendly.
Staff carefully brought the cats indoors and gave them a quiet, secure area where they could rest. To everyone’s relief, the whole family appeared healthy and calm.
The mother cat was especially trusting. She allowed the team to handle her and even vaccinate her without any trouble, all while continuing to care for her babies.
The kittens were estimated to be only 2 to 3 weeks old, much too young to survive without their mom. Shelter staff contacted their rescue partners and arranged a foster home where the family could receive proper care.
After the shelter shared the cats’ story on Facebook, a surprising message came from a nearby family. They recognized the mother cat immediately.
Her name was Miss Prisscilla, and she had been missing for months.
Her owners had feared someone had taken her. They contacted the shelter right away and confirmed she was theirs by sending photos. When Miss Prisscilla disappeared, she had not been pregnant, so her family was stunned to learn she had returned as a mother.
Their reunion was emotional. It was obvious they had missed their cat deeply and were relieved to know she was safe.
For now, Miss Prisscilla and her kittens will stay with an experienced foster family so veterinarians can keep an eye on them. Once the kittens are old enough, they’ll be ready to find homes of their own.
Shelter staff are grateful the little family was discovered in time — and excited to watch the kittens grow stronger and begin showing their personalities.
