A zoo in Devon has found a heartfelt way to honor a beloved volunteer who recently passed away by naming a baby monkey after him. Nigel Edwards, who dedicated over 20 years to Shaldon Wildlife Trust, passed away in May. To commemorate his lasting impact, the zoo has named a baby red titi monkey, born in January, βNigel.β
Zak Showell, the zooβs director, expressed that naming the monkey after Edwards was the “least they could do” to acknowledge his “years of dedication.” Edwards was known for his warm welcome to visitors at the front desk and his tradition of bringing a box of chocolates every Saturday to keep fellow volunteers motivated.
The Shaldon Wildlife Trust is a charitable organization committed to the conservation of endangered species and their natural habitats. Edwards’ role was integral to the zooβs operations, and his friendly demeanor made him a cherished figure among visitors and staff alike. “In those 20 years, Nigel served tens of thousands of visitors,” said Showell. “He was a constant source of joy and support.”
The baby monkey, one of the eighth offspring of the pair Cupid and Joey, is at an exciting stage of development. He is starting to explore independently and has become a “little joy to watch,” according to Showell.
In addition to naming the monkey in his memory, the zoo plans to plant a camellia, one of Edwards’ favorite plants, as a living tribute. Showell emphasized, βGiven Nigelβs years of dedication to our charity, naming a baby animal after him and planting a camellia is a small way to honor his contributions and remember his legacy.β
With over 40 volunteers supporting various roles at the zoo, Edwardsβ unique blend of enthusiasm and dedication left a lasting impression. His memory will continue to be celebrated through these meaningful tributes.
