Months after the passing of renowned primatologist and conservation icon Jane Goodall, her life’s work continues to inspire people around the globe.

To celebrate that legacy, the Jane Goodall Institute has announced that April 3 — Goodall’s birthday — will now officially be recognized as Jane Goodall Day.

The organization described the new annual observance as a day dedicated to action, reflection and continuing the work that defined Goodall’s remarkable life.

Honoring a Life of Conservation

Goodall, who died on October 1, 2025, at age 91, spent decades transforming how the world understands animals, conservation and humanity’s relationship with nature.

Her groundbreaking research with chimpanzees changed science forever, while her advocacy helped spark a global movement focused on protecting wildlife and ecosystems.

According to the institute, Jane Goodall Day will celebrate the countless individuals, communities and organizations that continue to carry forward her vision for a healthier planet.

A Day of Action for the Planet

Rather than simply being a day of remembrance, the institute hopes Jane Goodall Day will inspire people to take meaningful steps to help the environment.

Supporters are encouraged to participate in activities such as:

  • Planting trees
  • Cleaning up local parks or natural areas
  • Supporting youth conservation initiatives
  • Donating to environmental causes

Many of these efforts are connected to the institute’s long-running youth program, Roots & Shoots, which empowers young people to take action for animals, communities and the environment.

Keeping Her Vision Alive

The institute has also launched an interactive digital experience highlighting Goodall’s achievements and the many change-makers who have helped extend her work over the years.

For supporters around the world, the new holiday serves as a reminder of Goodall’s most powerful message: real change happens when people work together.

By turning her birthday into a global day of action, the institute hopes that her passion for wildlife, conservation and community will continue to inspire future generations.

As the organization explained, Jane often said there is always hope when people choose to act.

Jane Goodall Day aims to ensure that hope — and her life’s mission — continue for years to come. 🌍🌱
