This past January, a driver traveling through a rural stretch of Oklahoma noticed something unusual along the roadside. Curled together in the brush was a pile of eight fluffy puppies — alone in the cold.
With a snowstorm forecast to hit soon, it was clear the puppies wouldn’t survive on their own. The Good Samaritan immediately reached out to Puppy Haven Rescue for help.
A volunteer rushed to the scene and carefully lifted each puppy from the dirt, bringing them somewhere warm and safe.
Safe at Last
Once inside, rescuers were able to assess the pups. The 9-week-old litter turned out to be a Great Pyrenees and German Shepherd mix — big-breed babies with thick coats but still far too young to fend for themselves.
The team named them Peeta, Katniss, Haymitch, Primrose, Rue, Gale, Johanna and Effie — a nod to characters from The Hunger Games.
Thanks to the rescue’s network, all eight quickly secured foster homes.
“They are doing great!” said Breanne Luiskutty, president of Puppy Haven Rescue. “They’re thriving in their foster homes.”
Watching Over Mom
Rescuers are also monitoring the puppies’ mother, who is believed to be feral. While she isn’t suited for life in a human home, the team wants to ensure she remains safe and healthy.
For the rescue, the situation is a reminder of how quickly things can change when someone chooses to step in.

According to Luiskutty, there are many ways to support animals in need — especially in areas like Oklahoma, where shelters and rescues are often overwhelmed.
Helping doesn’t always mean adopting. It can include:
- Fostering a pet
- Volunteering time
- Donating supplies or funds
- Sharing adoptable animals on social media
- Advocating for spay and neuter programs
- Ensuring your own pets are spayed or neutered
“Animal welfare isn’t just about saving dogs,” Luiskutty said. “It’s about supporting the people behind the scenes.”
Because one person stopped their car and made a call, eight puppies now have a chance at loving homes.
“Their future is full of hope,” Luiskutty said. “They’ll be someone’s best friend very soon.”
