“She refused to separate from the door” 💔

Carolina wasn’t initially concerned when she first saw the black-and-tan dog curled up on the sidewalk during her daily commute. The pup, peacefully asleep beside a house in her Cuautitlan, Mexico neighborhood, seemed to belong there. So, Carolina passed by without a second thought.

“I thought she lived there, so I went home without worrying,” Carolina later explained in a letter to local rescues. “But every time I walked by, there she was.”

As days passed and the dog remained in the same spot, Carolina began to suspect that no one was taking care of her. She started bringing dog food on her commute, feeding the pup whenever she passed by. After each feeding, Carolina knocked on the door of the house behind the dog, but no one answered.

“I knocked for three days in a row, but no one ever came to the door,” Carolina recalled. “There was only an open window. That’s when I told her, ‘I’m going to help you.’”

After her third attempt to contact the homeowners, Carolina decided to take action. She gently scooped up the dog, whom she named Baguira, and took her straight to the vet.

Baguira was spayed, vaccinated, and treated for parasites, spending the next few days recovering at the clinic. During that time, Carolina tried to find out if anyone claimed ownership of the dog.

“I returned to the house where I found her, and this time, someone opened the door,” Carolina wrote. A girl recognized Baguira but denied ownership, saying she had no interest in taking care of her.

“I couldn’t leave her there,” Carolina said, especially with an impending rainstorm. “She’s such a loyal puppy.”

Although Carolina took Baguira home, she knew she couldn’t keep her forever. She penned a letter detailing the pup’s story and shared it with local rescues, hoping to find her a loving, permanent home.

“She’s around six months old,” Carolina wrote. “I saw her curled up outside a house and thought she lived there. But every time I passed, I saw her again. I fed her and knocked on the door for three days, but no one answered. I took her to the vet for treatment, but when I finally spoke to someone at the house, they refused responsibility. I couldn’t leave her there.”

Carolina described Baguira as a puppy full of energy, who loves walking on a leash and running like a deer. “She needs space to grow and thrive. I want to foster her, but I can’t give her the freedom and exercise she needs.”

Beatriz Ordaz, a local rescuer, was moved by Carolina’s letter. She recognized Baguira but hadn’t realized the dog didn’t belong to the home she always stayed near.

“She refused to leave the door,” Ordaz shared. “My son wanted to bring her home, but we’re fostering another dog and can’t take in another.”

While Ordaz couldn’t offer Baguira a home, she became dedicated to helping Carolina find the right family for her. The two women have been searching for Baguira’s perfect match ever since.

“Her ideal home would have a big yard where she can run, and a soft bed by her person’s couch,” Carolina said. “She needs someone who will take her for walks and, most importantly, give her lots of love.”

Baguira remains in Carolina’s care, loved and nurtured, but she would thrive in a permanent home with more space to play and grow.

“Baguira has so much love to give,” Carolina wrote.
