For most people, Halloween decorations come down as soon as October ends. But for David Ellis, spooky season never really stops.
For the past three years, Ellis has proudly displayed a towering 12-foot skeleton in his front yard, occasionally adding a skeletal animal companion to complete the eerie scene.
The giant decoration had become a familiar sight, standing guard over his property through every season.
But this October, Ellis noticed something unusual about his longtime Halloween companion.
Something dark and mysterious had appeared inside the skeleton’s ribcage.
And it definitely hadn’t been part of the original decoration.
At first glance, the strange object looked almost like a large, dark heart nestled between the skeleton’s enormous bones.
But when Ellis took a closer look, he discovered that his Halloween display had attracted some unexpected visitors.
A colony of hornets had built an enormous papery nest right inside the skeleton’s chest.
Apparently, while the decoration stood outside over the past few months, the insects had decided its hollow ribcage was the perfect place to build their home.
The result was a spooky sight that looked almost too perfectly timed for Halloween.
The massive nest hung inside the skeleton like a mysterious organ, making the already frightening decoration look even more realistic.
One person who saw the unusual discovery online even compared the nest to “a dead heart.”
Rather than being horrified, Ellis appeared amused by the unexpected addition to his yard.
βMy 12β skeleton made some friends!β he joked on Instagram.
And he wasn’t the only one fascinated by the bizarre discovery.
Local resident Zach Piazza happened to walk past the giant skeleton and immediately noticed something strange inside its chest.
At first, he couldn’t figure out what he was looking at.
But once he realized the dark mass was actually a hornets’ nest, the sight became even more unsettling.
βI thought it was weird enough that something was in the skeletonβs chest, then I saw it was a hornetsβ nest,β Piazza told The Dodo.
The unexpected combination of creepy Halloween decor and real-life nature was enough to give him chills.
But it also sparked his creativity.
Piazza, a drummer in the doom-jazz band BLK LDG, thought the unusual scene looked like something straight out of a horror movie β or perhaps the perfect artwork for a music album.
βIt was pretty badass,β he said.
Although it’s unclear whether the hornets’ nest is still active, one thing is certain: Ellis’s giant skeleton has never looked quite like this before.
After spending years as a simple Halloween decoration, it has somehow become part of a real-life spooky surprise.
And the funniest part? Ellis didn’t have to spend a single dollar on the terrifying new addition β nature took care of the decorating all by itself. πβ€οΈ
