The babies were struggling to breathe.

A man was walking through Birmingham, England, when he spotted something unusual in an alleyway between a bakery and a shop. A pile of boxes and pet carriers had been left behind, seemingly abandoned without a second thought.

Curious and concerned, he decided to take a closer look. What he discovered inside was heartbreaking: 26 cats and kittens trapped in the boxes and carriers.

The man immediately realized the animals were in danger and knew he couldn’t simply walk away.

β€œThe finder said that when he came across them, many were lethargic and appeared to be struggling to breathe in the boxes,” Paul Nijjar, an animal rescue officer with the RSPCA, said in a press release.

Without wasting time, the man freed the cats trapped inside the boxes and made sure they were safely inside the carriers. He then contacted the RSPCA, whose team stepped in to help the vulnerable animals.

Two of the kittens, later named Maude and Mr. Gold, were in particularly poor condition. They were rushed to Birmingham Animal Hospital, where veterinarians treated them for fleas, anemia and dehydration.

Thankfully, both kittens are now recovering and making progress.

The remaining 24 cats and kittens were taken into the RSPCA’s care. Despite the frightening ordeal they had endured, most were in relatively good condition and began bouncing back quickly once they were safe.

Still, the circumstances in which the animals were found deeply troubled their rescuers.

β€œThis is an incredibly cruel way to treat defenseless cats and kittens,” Nijjar said. β€œWe know people are struggling, but there are ways to get help. We are so grateful to the person who found these felines and for getting them help as soon as possible.”

The cats had been abandoned beside a busy street in broad daylight, leaving many questions about how they ended up there. The RSPCA is now reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area in the hope of discovering who left them behind and what happened.

Sadly, cases involving large numbers of cats are becoming an increasing challenge for animal rescuers. According to the RSPCA, the charity has seen a 67 percent rise in multi-cat rescues over the past year.

The organization took in around 20,000 cats in 2025 and expects that number to be surpassed in 2026. With rescue teams already stretched thin, caring for so many vulnerable animals puts enormous pressure on the people working tirelessly to protect them.

Even so, rescuers continue to show up for animals who have nowhere else to turn.

And in this case, one stranger’s decision to investigate a suspicious pile of boxes made all the difference.

Thanks to his quick thinking, all 26 cats and kittens are now safe and receiving care. Once they’re healthy and ready for their next chapter, they’ll be available for adoption, giving them the chance to leave this frightening experience behind and find loving homes of their own.
