Beneath all that tangled fur was a little dog waiting for a second chance
About a year ago, people in a Kansas City neighborhood began noticing a strange-looking animal wandering alone through the streets.
At first, some residents weren’t even sure what they were seeing.
The animal’s coat was so overgrown, dirty and badly matted that she barely resembled a dog.
According to KC Pet Project, some neighbors initially assumed she might be a wild animal and kept their distance.
Eventually, one concerned person realized the truth and brought her to safety.
Shelter Staff Could Hardly Believe What They Saw
When the dog arrived at KC Pet Project, staff members were stunned by the condition of her coat.
They named her Dolly.
Her fur had become so thick and tangled that her legs were almost completely hidden underneath it.
One staff member described her as looking like a tiny cotton ball with legs.
The shelter team had helped dogs with severe matting before, but Dolly’s condition was especially extreme.
They Removed Nearly Two Pounds Of Fur
After examining Dolly, the veterinary team immediately began the painstaking process of freeing her from the heavy mats.
They carefully shaved away layer after layer of tangled fur.
Her nails also needed urgent attention. They had grown so long that walking had become extremely difficult and painful.
The entire grooming process took roughly two hours.
By the time they finished, the team had removed about 1.7 pounds of matted fur from Dolly’s tiny body.
For such a small dog, it had been an enormous burden to carry.
Learning To Walk Normally Again
Removing the mats transformed Dolly’s appearance, but her recovery was only beginning.
Because she had spent so long moving under the weight of the tangled fur and dealing with overgrown nails, her body had adapted to an unnatural way of walking.
Without that weight, Dolly initially seemed unsteady.
