She is so glad she stopped to investigate.
Veterinarian Letícia Leitão was spending the weekend at her aunt’s home in rural Brazil when an ordinary morning run turned into an unexpected rescue.
While jogging along a quiet countryside road, Leitão reached a remote area and suddenly heard an animal crying.
The sound was coming from a small hole in the ground connected to a broken drainage pipe.
At first, Leitão could not see what was inside, but she could tell the cries were coming from a young dog.
“I immediately suspected something might have gone wrong,” Leitão said. “So, I decided to investigate.”
Soon, an adult female dog appeared nearby, and Leitão believed she might be the puppy’s mother.
Leitão carefully encouraged the puppy to come out of the pipe. Once the puppy was free, both dogs decided to follow her.
“They kept me company and made me feel much safer, since I had been walking alone in a remote area,” Leitão said.
The dogs followed her all the way back to her aunt’s house and even stayed beside her while she ate lunch.
Later, Leitão discovered that the dogs had not been abandoned. They belonged to a nearby neighbor and were known for wandering around on little adventures.
This time, however, one of those adventures had gone wrong.
Thankfully, Leitão happened to be running along that road and heard the puppy’s cries. The dogs were eventually able to return home safely.
