She couldn’t believe her eyes.
Mail carrier Kim Novak was recently making her rounds in Arkansas when she noticed something troubling near a freeway.
A mother dog and several puppies appeared to be living alone in a ditch.
Novak knew the family needed help, so she immediately began making calls.
Her first attempt was a local animal shelter, but staff there were already at capacity. She then contacted animal control, only to learn that the location fell outside the officer’s jurisdiction.
Still, Novak kept trying.
Eventually, she reached Jak’s Second Chance Rescue Ranch, a nonprofit animal rescue.
This time, someone was able to respond.
Rescuer Chris York headed to the area and quickly found a dog bed that appeared to belong to the family.
But there was one problem.
The dogs were gone.
Another volunteer, Linda Daugherty, stayed nearby in her car and watched the area, hoping the family would return.
After some time, she noticed movement in the distance.
It was the mother dog.
She remained nervous and kept her distance, but rescuers took her appearance as a sign that the puppies were probably hiding somewhere close by.
With help from local dog expert Tommye Watts, the team began searching the surrounding wilderness and setting humane traps.
Eventually, Watts discovered the puppies curled together inside a patch of briars.
Rescuers carefully gathered the tiny dogs and wrapped them together in a T-shirt to keep them safe and secure.
Now they needed to reunite them with their mother.
The team waited for hours.
Finally, around midnight, the exhausted mama entered one of the traps.
With the whole family safe, rescuers transported them to Jak’s Second Chance Rescue Ranch.
For the mother dog, the relief appeared immediate.
“She was so exhausted, she ate and drank an entire bowl of water and just completely zonked out,” rescue director Jenny Bridges said. “Her babies nursed, and she was just visibly grateful to be inside and safe.”
Once she realized that the people around her were there to help, her nervousness quickly faded.
“We all know how it feels to be a parent and how we’d do anything at all to protect our kids, and this momma dog was no different,” Bridges said. “As soon as she realized we were there to help her and not to hurt her, she just melted and accepted pets and treats and love.”
Rescuers named the mother Jolene.
Her six puppies were given equally memorable names: Dolly, Bowie, Jagger, Ozzy, Olivia and Prince.
The team then coordinated with Forgotten Paws of Northwest Arkansas, which agreed to take the entire family into its care.
What started with one mail carrier noticing something unusual beside a freeway ultimately became a coordinated rescue involving several people who refused to give up.
Now Jolene and her puppies are no longer sleeping in the wilderness or hiding among briars.
They’re safe, together and finally getting the chance to begin again.
