Every morning, a group of street dogs in Kanpur, India, would gather outside one particular house, eagerly waiting for the sound of a familiar gate opening.
They weren’t waiting for just anyone.
They were waiting for a kindhearted elderly man who had made them part of his daily life, someone who never forgot to feed them and always treated them with the love and kindness they deserved.
But one day, the gate didn’t open as usual.
And the dogs continued waiting, unaware that their beloved friend would never come outside to greet them again.
For Toronto resident Shefali Jain, the extraordinary bond between her grandfather and these neighborhood dogs was something she had witnessed firsthand during her visits to India.
Every morning, her grandfather, whom she affectionately called Nana, would step outside with a fresh bag of food. Within moments, his four-legged friends would appear, excited to see the person they had come to trust so deeply.
“The dogs recognize the sound of him opening the gate,” Jain shared on Instagram. “And they always come running to him.”

While some people in the neighborhood considered the street dogs a nuisance, Jain’s grandfather saw something entirely different.
To him, they weren’t unwanted animals or a problem to be ignored. They were living beings who deserved compassion, food, and a little bit of love.
“My sweet nana has always seen them differently,” Jain explained. “He sees them as the pure, innocent souls that they are.”
And he made sure his actions reflected those feelings.
Day after day, regardless of how ordinary his morning might have seemed, he took the time to care for his furry visitors.
Over time, this simple act of kindness blossomed into something truly special.
The same dogs began gathering outside his home each morning, knowing they could count on him. Their excited greetings became part of his daily routine, and their presence brought him just as much happiness as his kindness brought them.
“He says the dogs wait for him every morning,” Jain recalled. “I think he waits for them, too.”

But sadly, their beautiful routine couldn’t last forever.
Jain’s grandfather passed away in October, leaving behind a grieving family and a group of devoted street dogs who had no way of understanding why their favorite person had suddenly disappeared.
When Jain traveled back to Kanpur for his funeral, she discovered something that made an already heartbreaking time even more emotional.
The dogs were still waiting for him.
They lingered around the house where he had greeted them so many times before, seemingly expecting the familiar gate to open and their beloved friend to appear with food in his hands.
But what happened next was especially moving.
Other people tried feeding the dogs, hoping to provide the same care that Jain’s grandfather had always given them.
Yet the animals reportedly refused to eat.
“Others tried offering them food, but they refused,” Jain said. “They wanted the same hands that used to feed them every day.”
It was as though they weren’t simply missing their daily meals.
They were missing him.
Seeing their apparent sadness, Jain wanted to help the dogs feel close to her grandfather one more time.
So she brought them one of his old shirts.
The fabric still carried his familiar scent, something the animals had known and trusted throughout their time together.
As the dogs sniffed the shirt, the moment became deeply emotional for Jain, who felt that they were somehow recognizing the absence of the man who had cared for them.

“Grief doesn’t need words,” Jain reflected. “These dogs somehow know that Nana is now gone from their world. They feel his absence every day and are grieving, too.”
For Jain, the experience was a powerful reminder that the connections we form with animals can run far deeper than we sometimes realize.
