Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews are used to arriving at scenes without knowing exactly what they will encounter.
But when Engine 48 was dispatched last Friday for a report of ducklings trapped inside a garbage bin, firefighters certainly did not expect to find what was actually waiting for them.
When they looked inside, there were no ducklings at all.
Instead, a black Lab-mix dog was sitting inside the dumpster.
A Completely Unexpected Rescue
The dog was panting beneath the intense Florida sun when firefighters discovered him.
It was unclear how he had ended up inside the garbage bin or how long he had been trapped there.
The crew carefully approached him and worked to gain his trust before checking whether he had suffered any injuries.
Fortunately, the dog appeared to be physically unharmed.
There Was No Way to Find His Owner
Firefighters searched for a collar, identification tag or phone number that might help them reunite the dog with his family.
They found nothing.
With no immediate clues about where he belonged, the crew knew they could not simply leave him behind.
Within moments of meeting the friendly pup, the firefighters had already decided they would make sure he was safe.
Jack Gets VIP Treatment at the Fire Station
The crew brought the dog back to their station, where his life quickly became much more comfortable.
Firefighters gave him food, a bath and a secure place to rest after his stressful experience.
They also decided their unexpected guest needed a name.
They called him Jack.
He Quickly Became Part of the Crew
Jack appeared to settle into life at the station with surprising ease.
After being found alone inside a dumpster, he was suddenly surrounded by people eager to give him attention and care.
The pup fit in so naturally that it seemed as though he had been part of Engine 48 all along.

One Firefighter Opens His Home
Rather than send Jack elsewhere while he waited for adoption, one of the firefighters volunteered to foster him.
Jack is now staying in a home where he can receive plenty of care while rescuers search for a permanent family.
The arrangement means he no longer has to worry about being alone or exposed to the heat.
