She couldn’t move π₯Ά
This past January, Brian Owen was walking near a marina in Detroit, Michigan, when he heard faint cries coming from one of the docks. Concerned, he followed the sound and soon spotted a tiny kitten curled up on a metal beam above the icy water.
At first, Owen tried to gently encourage the kitten to come toward him. But then he realized she wasnβt just scared β she was stuck.
The weather was freezing. Ice covered the water, frost coated the area and the kittenβs little paws had become frozen to the metal beam.
Owen knew he had to act carefully. He soaked a towel in warm water and gently used it to melt the ice around her paws. Once the kitten was finally free, he wrapped her in his coat and used his own body heat to warm her up.
Even though Owen is allergic to cats, he couldnβt leave the tiny kitten behind. He took her home and named her Chilly, a fitting name for a cat rescued from such a freezing situation.
Chillyβs paws were raw and sore after being stuck to the icy metal for so long, so Owen brought her to several vet appointments. Her doctors treated her wounds, and after about a month of care, she was feeling much better.
As Chilly healed, her personality began to shine. Owen discovered that she was playful, affectionate and full of energy. She loved toys, cat trees and spending time with her new family.
She even became friends with Owenβs two golden retrievers.
Before long, Chilly wasnβt just a rescued kitten β she was part of the family.
Her rescue also changed Owenβs life in an unexpected way. After saving Chilly, he became more involved in helping other cats in his neighborhood. He now brings stray kittens to local rescues so they can be adopted, helps with trap-neuter-release efforts for outdoor cat colonies, and puts out food for cats in need.
During the cold Michigan winters, Owen also sets up little shelters with protection from the weather and hand warmers to help stray cats stay safe.
Owen never expected to become a cat person, especially because of his allergies. But Chilly changed that. By saving her from the frozen dock, he found a new purpose β and, in a way, she rescued him too.
