“[W]eβll catch him staring through the screen door, waiting for us to come outside …”
When Makenna Beckman and her husband moved into their house about a year ago, they quickly noticed that their porch already had several tiny residents. Geckos were often darting around outside, but most of them were shy. Whenever the couple got too close, the little reptiles would quickly run away.
Except for one.
One gecko, who was missing his tail, seemed different from the rest. Instead of fleeing, he appeared curious. He allowed the couple to come closer, and before long, they started offering him little pieces of fruit.
Those small gestures helped build trust. The couple named him Tailless, and over time, he became more and more comfortable around them.
Beckman and her husband soon realized they could recognize him not only because of his missing tail, but because of the way he looked at them. Unlike the other geckos, Tailless seemed to make eye contact. He appeared curious, alert and strangely trusting.

Eventually, Taillessβ tail grew back, but his name stayed the same.
As the months passed, his bond with the couple grew stronger. Now, whenever they open the door, Tailless often comes running over. Sometimes he is already waiting for them outside, as if he knows they are about to come out.
Most of the time, he seems happy to see both Beckman and her husband. He will climb onto one hand, then jump to the other, moving back and forth between them like he is simply spending time with friends.
The couple does not let Tailless inside the house because they want to keep him safe. He is small and quick, and they worry he could hide somewhere, get stepped on or become lost indoors. Instead, they spend time with him outside whenever they can.
Tailless seems to enjoy those visits. When the couple returns from trips, he sometimes acts extra excited to see them, appearing even clingier than usual. On some mornings, they find him staring through the screen door, waiting for them to come outside.
After Beckman shared their unusual friendship online, people began comparing them to Rapunzel and Pascal from Tangled.
What started as a simple kindness toward a shy little gecko has become a sweet and unexpected friendship. Tailless may be tiny, but he has brought a huge amount of joy to the coupleβs life.
