What began in a Northumberland forest with just two ponies has since become a major conservation success across the UK.

In 2006, two young Exmoor ponies, affectionately named Puddles and Prancer, were released into Kielder Forest as part of an effort to help restore natural ecosystems.

Two decades later, that modest beginning has developed into a far-reaching movement for wildlife recovery.

The Wildlife Trusts are now marking 20 years of progress supported by £31 million raised through Postcode Lottery players. That funding has helped back projects throughout the country aimed at protecting wildlife and helping people build a stronger connection with nature.

The results have been seen all over the UK, from habitat restoration and species reintroductions to local efforts that bring communities outdoors and closer to the natural world.

Craig Bennett said the long-running partnership with the Postcode Lottery has played an important role in helping The Wildlife Trusts respond to the climate crisis, with each project contributing to the larger goal of safeguarding nature.

Laura Chow added that lottery players understand how important charities like The Wildlife Trusts are, describing their work as both essential for the future and deeply inspiring.
