She wouldn’t have made it on her own.
When Ella and her 12 puppies arrived at Patty Baker Humane Society, they were coming from an overcrowded shelter in southwest Florida, in desperate need of a new beginning. The staff welcomed them with open arms and plenty of enthusiasm.
“The pups were about 4 weeks old when they arrived, so they’ve been in our care through all the messy, adorable, chaotic parts of puppyhood,” said Becca Morris, CEO of Patty Baker Humane Society. “They’re really just your typical puppies — playful, sweet and full of love. This group was actually pretty calm. They loved being held, getting belly rubs and just hanging out with people. Overall, just super affectionate and easygoing puppies.”
One by One — Until Four Were Left Behind
Slowly but surely, the puppies began finding their forever homes, adopted one by one into loving families. But four of them — Collier, Bailey, Banyan and Max — kept getting overlooked. Despite being just as sweet and playful as their siblings, something wasn’t clicking with potential adopters, and the team grew determined to change that.

The Brilliant Idea Nobody Saw Coming
After putting their heads together, the shelter’s events and communications manager landed on a solution that was equal parts silly and genius — cowboy hats.
“When you have a lot of adorable adoptable dogs, sometimes you need a little something to help a pup stand out in the crowd,” Morris explained. “Our event and communications manager had the brilliant idea to put them in cowboy hats.”
The shelter filmed the four pups showing off their tiny hats and posted the video to social media. It spread like wildfire. And just three days later, all four puppies had been adopted.

“Two families actually drove all the way from Miami to adopt them,” Morris said.
The Hats Worked — But Mama Is Still Waiting
The puppies had simply needed a little extra sparkle to help their families find them, and the cowboy hats delivered exactly that. All twelve pups were now safe, loved and settled into their new homes — but their devoted mother, Ella, was still at the shelter, patiently waiting for her turn.

“Ella is honestly the perfect package — she’s goofy, loving, playful and great with other dogs,” Morris said. “She spent months being the best mom to 12 puppies, who all found homes, and now it’s her turn to just be someone’s dog.”
Now It’s Ella’s Turn
In the hopes of giving Ella the same viral magic that worked for her puppies, the shelter dressed her in that same iconic cowboy hat and shared her story with the world. After months of selflessly raising twelve little ones, this sweet, devoted mama deserves nothing less than a loving home to call her own — and everyone at Patty Baker Humane Society is rooting for her.
