Families in Worcestershire are being urged to take extra care when visiting farms and petting zoos this Easter, following concerns about harmful infections.
Professor Lisa McNally, the county’s director of public health, said that while these visits are a “great way for families to get outdoors,” they can also pose health risks.
“It’s important to remember that these environments can carry germs that may make people unwell,” she warned.
Past outbreak raises concerns
The warning comes two years after an outbreak of Cryptosporidium at Gannow Farm in Inkberrow.
The attraction, known for its hands-on animal experiences, was temporarily closed at the time, and visitors were offered refunds.
One mother from Redditch said her four-year-old daughter became seriously ill after visiting the farm during the Easter holidays. The child reportedly lost a significant amount of weight after contracting a parasitic infection.
“She was the weight of a baby, not a four-year-old. It was horrendous,” the mother said.
A spokesperson for the farm later expressed sympathy for those affected.
Importance of proper hygiene
Professor McNally stressed that infections can spread easily through simple hand-to-mouth contact after touching animals or contaminated surfaces.
“The best protection is thorough handwashing with soap and warm water after handling animals and before eating,” she said.
She also warned that hand gels and wipes are not effective against many of the germs found in farm environments.
Extra risk during lambing season
The risk is particularly high during lambing season, when infections like Cryptosporidium can spread more easily from young animals.
“These infections can cause severe stomach illness, especially in young children and pregnant women,” McNally said.
Stay safe while enjoying visits
Health officials are encouraging families to continue enjoying farm visits — but to take simple precautions.
Washing hands properly, supervising children and avoiding eating near animals can help reduce the risk and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
