His previous owner didn’t even give him a name π
When a man walked into the Benton-Franklin Humane Society with a golden retriever puppy, staff expected a difficult story.
Instead, they got something far more surprising.
βHe just sounded so casual about it,β volunteer Julie Saraceno said. βLike, βI have a dog I need to get rid of.ββ
A Rough Start
The man had only had the puppy for three days β and hadnβt even given him a name.
He arrived with no proper leash, just a rope clipped to the pupβs collar.
Staff quickly realized the dog, only about 5 months old, deserved much better.
So Saraceno gave him a name that fit his soft golden fur perfectly: Waffles.
Scared And Overwhelmed
At first, Waffles was terrified.
The shelter environment β loud, unfamiliar, and full of new smells β left him shaking and unsure of everything around him.
βHe kept looking around nervously,β Saraceno said.
It was clear he needed comfort more than anything else.

A Simple Bath Changed Everything
The team decided to start with something gentle: a warm bath.
And thatβs when everything shifted.
βI have never seen a dog so relaxed in a bath before,β Saraceno said. βIt was like a spa day.β
For the first time since arriving, Waffles began to calm down and feel safe.
Learning To Trust Again
After his bath, Saraceno sat quietly with Waffles on the floor by his kennel.

No pressure. No expectations. Just presence.
Within about 30 minutes, the frightened puppy curled up and fell asleep beside her.
It was a small moment β but a huge step forward.
A Happy Ending Came Fast
It didnβt take long for Wafflesβ true personality to shine through.
Sweet, gentle, and absolutely adorable, he quickly caught the attention of potential adopters.
As soon as he was ready, Waffles was adopted into a loving home.

More Than Just One Story
Wafflesβ journey is a reminder of something important:
You never really know who youβll meet at a shelter.
βThere are probably at least 10 other puppies at the shelter right now,β Saraceno said.
And just like Waffles, each one is waiting for someone to give them the chance they deserve. πΆβ¨
