“We had to make sure everyone was out.”
Last week, Richard Keith Taylor, his wife Melanie, and their dog Ace were driving through Cleveland when something alarming caught their attention.
As they passed a nearby home, Richard noticed flames glowing through one of the windows.
“The window was glowing with fire,” Richard later recalled in a post shared by the Cleveland Fire Department. “We had to make sure everyone was out.”
What followed was a rescue that saved not just one life — but two.
A Heroic Rescue From the Flames
Richard rushed toward the house and ran up the front steps.
Inside, the home was already filling with smoke. Amid the chaos, he spotted an elderly woman who appeared confused and unable to escape on her own.
Without hesitation, Richard entered the house, lifted the woman in his arms and carried her out to safety.
As he crossed the porch with her, the window he had noticed earlier suddenly shattered from the heat.
Thanks to Richard’s quick actions, the woman survived the fire.

Ace Senses Someone Else Inside
Soon after, firefighters arrived and worked to extinguish the blaze.
Richard, Melanie and Ace stayed nearby while crews battled the fire.
Then Ace suddenly began pulling hard on his leash, sniffing intensely toward a boarded-up basement window.
Richard alerted the firefighters.
“He smells something down there,” he told the battalion chief.
A Second Life Saved

Firefighters had already checked the basement earlier during the rescue. But because of Ace’s insistence, they decided to search again.
This time, they made a remarkable discovery.
Hidden behind a closed door in the basement was the homeowner’s dog, who had taken shelter in a small room during the fire. When the fire intensified, the door had been blown shut, trapping him inside.
Fortunately, the dog was unharmed.
If Ace hadn’t alerted the firefighters, the trapped pet might have remained unnoticed.
Two Heroes in One Day

Thanks to Richard’s bravery and Ace’s keen instincts, both the homeowner and her dog were saved.
Firefighters and community members quickly praised the pair for their actions.
“It’s God’s work,” Richard said afterward. “Just glad I was in the right place at the right time.”
And Ace — whose nose led to the second rescue — was clearly proud to have played his part too. 🐶🚒
