She was barely recognizable …
A gardener working in San Clemente made a heartbreaking discovery while tending bushes a few months ago. Hidden among the plants was a tiny bobcat kitten who looked extremely sick.
The young wild cat was lying on the ground, barely moving — and much of her fur was missing.
Concerned for the animal’s life, the gardener carefully brought her to a local shelter, which quickly transferred the bobcat to Serrano Animal & Bird Hospital for emergency care.
Fighting for Her Life
When the kitten arrived at the hospital, veterinarians realized just how critical her condition was.
She was suffering from severe mange, was dangerously underweight and had almost no strength left. According to the medical team, she was so close to death that they had to perform CPR to revive her.
Even after that, her survival was far from guaranteed.
In a remarkable effort to save her, the kitten received a blood transfusion donated by a veterinary technician’s pet cat — a life-saving act that likely made the difference.
A Long Road to Recovery
Once stabilized, the bobcat was transferred to San Diego Humane Society for long-term rehabilitation.
When she arrived, she was still in terrible shape.
Wildlife specialists began an intensive treatment plan that included:
- Antiparasitic medications to fight mange
- Iron supplements to address anemia
- Fluids and supportive care to rebuild strength
Experts also suspected the kitten had been exposed to rodenticides, which can weaken an animal’s immune system and make infections like mange far worse.
Learning to Live Wild Again
After two months of intensive care, the kitten was strong enough to move into an outdoor enclosure where she could begin readjusting to life in the wild.
Because she was still young and recovering her fur during colder months, the team allowed her extra time to grow stronger before release.
Over the course of four months, the transformation was incredible.
Her fur grew back thick and healthy, and the once-fragile kitten developed the energy and curiosity typical of a wild bobcat.
Back Where She Belongs
When the day finally arrived, staff from both the humane society and the veterinary hospital gathered to watch the moment they had all worked toward.
They opened the crate door — and the bobcat didn’t hesitate.
She leaped out, sprinted across the grass and disappeared into the nearby bushes.
For the rescuers who had watched her fight to survive, the sight was unforgettable.
The tiny kitten who had once been close to death was now strong, healthy and ready to live freely in the wild again. 🐾
