“He was exhausted …”
Last weekend, a group of veterinarians set out for a relaxing morning of paddleboarding along the coast of Puerto Madryn. The plan was simple: enjoy the sunrise and the calm ocean.
But the day quickly turned into an unexpected rescue mission.
Among the group was veterinarian Aldana Callaey, who spotted something unusual floating in the water far from shore.
A Strange Shape in the Water
At first, the group wasn’t sure what they were seeing.
But as they paddled closer, they realized it was a dog struggling to stay afloat in the open water. The animal was paddling farther and farther out to sea, clearly exhausted.
The vets quickly moved in to help.
They lifted the dog onto one of the paddleboards, where they discovered just how serious the situation was.
The poor pup could barely move.
Cold, Exhausted and Hypothermic
The dog was suffering from severe exhaustion and hypothermia after spending who knows how long in the cold water.
Without the veterinarians spotting him when they did, he likely wouldn’t have survived much longer.
Once back on shore, the group tried to locate the dog’s owner, asking people nearby if anyone recognized him.
No one did.
A Temporary Home
Since no one claimed the dog right away, one of the vets took him home to recover.
They dried him off, warmed him up and made sure he was safe while they searched for his family.
Soon after, the rescuers began posting photos and information about the dog in local online community groups.
It didn’t take long before someone recognized him.
A Missing Dog Finally Found
The dog’s name was Rocko, and his family had been searching for him for days.
Rocko had gone missing four days earlier — and somehow ended up nearly five miles away from home in the ocean.
No one knows exactly how he got there.
But thanks to the veterinarians who happened to be paddleboarding that morning, Rocko’s story had a happy ending.
Tears of Joy at the Reunion
When Rocko finally reunited with his family, emotions ran high.
His owners were overwhelmed with relief and gratitude after believing their beloved dog might never return home.
According to Callaey, the moment was unforgettable.
There were plenty of tears — but this time, they were tears of joy. 🐶🌊
