“Photos and videos don’t even begin to capture just how tiny he really is.”
Late last month, Kelsey Petko was near a dumpster in Missouri when she heard an unusual sound coming from the area.
Curious, she followed the noise and discovered it was coming from an empty diaper box.
When she looked inside, she found a tiny brown puppy staring back at her.
The little dog was severely underweight and clearly in desperate need of help. Petko quickly shared a photo of the puppy in a local Facebook group, hoping someone would know what to do.
The post soon caught the attention of St. Louis Animal Care and Control.
Officer Habib responded and safely removed the puppy from the area before bringing him to the Center for Animal Rescue and Enrichment of St. Louis, also known as CARE STL.
The puppy was given the name Porky.
Despite his fragile condition, rescuers immediately noticed that Porky still had plenty of personality. He was affectionate, energetic and eager to be close to the people caring for him.
Veterinary staff estimated that Porky was only around two months old.
He weighed just 3.8 pounds.
The puppy was so malnourished that he had almost no body fat and was initially unable to stand on his own. Staff said his tiny size was even more startling in person than it appeared in photographs.
Porky immediately began receiving medical treatment and careful nutritional support.
Although his body was extremely weak, rescuers could see that the little puppy had not given up.
He still wanted attention. He still wanted to play. And whenever he had enough energy, he tried to behave like any other curious puppy.
That determination quickly became one of the things everyone loved most about him.
Over the following weeks, Porky began making remarkable progress.
Little by little, he grew stronger. Eventually, he gained enough strength to stand on his own — a major milestone considering the condition he had been in when he was discovered.
His story also touched people throughout the community.
Supporters who had never met Porky began contacting the rescue to ask about his recovery and cheer him on from afar.
Recently, Porky became healthy enough to leave the shelter and continue recovering in a foster home.
His journey is not finished yet. He still needs to gain a considerable amount of weight, and his caregivers are making sure that happens slowly and safely.
But compared with the frightened, starving puppy found inside a discarded diaper box, Porky has already come an incredibly long way.
Every day, he is becoming stronger and getting closer to experiencing the normal puppy life he was nearly denied.
Once Porky reaches a healthy weight and completes his recovery, rescuers hope he will be ready for the final step in his journey: finding a permanent family.
